Understanding Shipping Container Numbers

At Aone Cargo, we know that every shipment begins with proper identification. Each shipping container has a unique container number, which is essential for tracking, documentation, and safe handling throughout the shipping process.

A standard container number follows the ISO 6346 international standard and consists of 11 characters:

  1. Owner Code (3 letters) – Identifies the company that owns the container.
  2. Equipment Category Identifier (1 letter) – Shows the type of container (e.g., freight container, trailer).
  3. Serial Number (6 digits) – A unique number assigned by the owner.
  4. Check Digit (1 digit) – Used to verify the container number is valid.

This unique code is usually painted on the right-hand side of the container doors, making it easy to spot and reference during transport.

Why it matters:

  • Ensures accurate shipment tracking worldwide
  • Helps avoid errors in documentation and customs clearance
  • Provides peace of mind for safe and efficient handling

At Aone Cargo, we make sure every shipment is correctly identified and smoothly handled from origin to destination.
