What is MSDS?

What is MSDS?

MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet . Internationally recognized as a chemical safety information document, an MSDS is provided by chemical manufacturers and importers to detail the physical and chemical properties of a substance (such as pH, flash point, flammability, reactivity) and potential hazards to human health (such as carcinogenic or teratogenic effects).

Goods Requiring MSDS Verification:
Typically, items such as batteries and chemical products need MSDS verification. An MSDS can identify whether a substance is hazardous or non-hazardous and confirm the specific handling requirements for certain special cargo. Each MSDS contains 16 essential sections, all of which are mandatory.

Key Requirements for MSDS Review:

  • The MSDS is valid for three years from the Issue Date.
  • All 16 sections must be fully completed, except for the section labeled “Other Information.”
  • The components listed in Section 2 or Section 3 must be 100% complete.
  • If Section 14 contains a UN Number or Class, the item is considered hazardous.
  • The manufacturer listed on the MSDS must match the manufacturer on the cargo transport certificate. If there is a discrepancy, the relationship between the two must be explained.
